Recognizing the full range of the human experience, and being committed by an ethical concern for the well-being of others, New York Tsurphu Goshir Dharma Center is home to the Rangjung Prison Dharma Project, an effort towards providing meaningful exploration of the mind, and how a greater sense of peace and release from habitual ways of seeing ourselves, and falling into old patterns that don’t always serve us well is possible through meditation and contemplative practice.  We currently serve a diverse swathe of the various populations at Rikers Island Correctional Facility. Beginning this year we also function as a Field Placement for students at Union Theological Seminary who wish to do a year of clinical work with the populations at Rikers.  Learn more about our dynamic program here.

Meditation Facilitator Training Program

This training is a way of supporting our volunteers or anyone wishing to unpack their meditation practice to be of service to others. It is a way of really trying to go deep into how we can bring our practice to benefit others as well as examine and play with some of the difficulties that arise in such work.  It is meant to be a way to try and lay a foundation as well as a sense of sangha (community of support) in doing this critical, radical work.  It is also a way to challenge ourselves to see how direct presence can arise amidst all of the complexities inherent in working in a jail/prison setting.  It is not the end-all, but more of a beginning, a place to start, no matter what your level of practice. The training can be attended by anyone, not just volunteers at Rikers- its also a great way to explore whether or not one wishes to work with us in our work at Rikers.

Please feel free to contact Repa Dorje Odzer  (dorjeodzer@goshir.org) to discuss if you are interested in volunteering with us.  We hold monthly meetings for our volunteers where they can share their experiences, receive meditation instruction and support one another.  The date of the next monthly meeting can be seen on our calendar.
